Patent No. 4,166,462 A

Self-propelled Shark-proof Cage

Inventors: James M. Ellis

Description: With me soon taking a vacation to Hawaii and participating in shark diving, I thought it would be interesting to see some inventions related to this activity. The invention is a self-propelled shark-proof cage used for collecting abalone, a sea snail, for longer periods of time without the worry or fear of predators.

The design is essentially a cage that has a dual hinged propeller attached to the rear side of the cage for thrust power and an air motor to provide buoyancy. Along with the power driven propellers is a hatch disposed on the bottom side of the cage for access to the abalone. A diver can use the hatch for quick and easy access to the abalone without fearing attack by any predators in the area. This device makes it safer for the user along with prolonged abalone collection with minimal exertion.

Although this device was designed for abalone collection, the device could be used for shark diving or snorkeling, depending on the location.
